Freedom to Khachaturyan sisters
Claims to Russian patriarchal justice continue.
By Karina Ginoyan
Russian society is still pending the injustice that the Maria sisters live, Angelina and Crestina Khachaturyan after killing their abusive father in July 2018. The support campaign took a new step for developments in the course of criminal proceedings.
Late 2019, the prosecutor refused to approve the charge very serious in the case of the girls that consisted of group murder premeditated. Although the researchers proved the fact of abuse systematic father, was not reflected in the accusation. Hence the prosecution return the case for requalification.
Nevertheless, a week ago the 13 of July 2020 the Lawyers reported on social media that the Investigation Committee sent the case to the prosecution, without changing the accusation to homicide in self defense (although the same prosecution had requested it on a previous occasion). The most paradoxical is that it signed the new version and submitted it to the Court. In summary, there are few foundations to make a good forecast about the possible penalties.
… defending the Khachaturyan sisters would be a great step forward to draw attention to the rights of other women who suffer abuse.
Experts interpret the severity and brutality that police agencies apply to the case (state traditionalism), hold to verges on future self-defense situations that cause the abuser's death. Of apply this cause, would set a momentous precedent for other victims. further, Mikhail's family is said to press and corrupt the researchers, just like the same abuser did before.
The first hearings are expected in the coming weeks. And during this time the activists launched a protest campaign consisting of sending more than 30.000 petitions to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Russia demanding to resign the accusation. If the progressive part of society manages to defend the Khachaturyan sisters it would be a great step forward to draw attention to the rights of the rest of the women who are abused..
