From amnesty to immigration, a labyrinth of debates
The PSOE-Junts investiture partners are engaged in different debates to which immigration has been added. They do it from retrograde positions that have little to envy of those held by the PP and Vox. Fundamental changes are needed to turn everything around from a socialist perspective.
The pacts that ERC and Junts signed with the PSOE to allow the investiture of Pedro Sánchez in exchange for a partial amnesty and without commitments for mechanisms for self-determination, They gave oxygen to the Spanish government and the '78 regime. Even so, The legislature was “tied with thread” between partners with differences and nuances. At the by, the reformists of SUMAR and Podemos wash the face of the government, the PP and Vox deploy a retrograde action against any type of amnesty and of measure that does not have the explicit stamp of the right. The PP shows a foolproof cynicism since, at the same time that he intends to act as a political prosecutor, on president, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, remains silent in the face of the public revelation of details about the use of State resources to illegally persecute the independence movement during the mandates of Mariano Rajoy. In this framework of political polarization and uncertainty, a new debate develops on immigration.
Migrations, another chapter of debate
The central government agonizingly achieved the approval of the first decrees in Congress, thanks to the fact that Junts abstained in the last minute of the vote. Those led by Carles Puigdemont affirm that in return the transfer of comprehensive powers to the Generalitat regarding immigration in Catalonia was accepted.. The PSOE rejects it, saying that he only committed to delegating partial powers. It's a tangle of half-truths, denials and “different interpretations” that lead to political fraud and further harm to immigrants, something that should not be normalized.
Why does Junts demand immigration management?
Although one issue is the language reception, The central thing is that they want the powers to limit the quota of arrival of immigrants according to percentages of the population of different nationalities and the GDP in relation to the rest of the State, Besides, for the ones Mossos d’Esquadra participate in decisions about expulsions since, how Vox does, have linked immigration to crime. They also have a two-way political objective.: take advantage of your ERC competitor, that disputes from the presidency of Pere Aragonés and another that appears from the extreme right, Catalan Alliance, the party of the mayor of Ripoll, Silvia Orriols, that combines a sovereigntist discourse with the rejection of foreigners. Thus, Junts takes up the worst postulates that at times its predecessors from Convergencia defended, like Pujol and Mas.
The PSOE for centralized control
As guarantor of the Constitution, the PSOE wants the different State Ministries to maintain centralized power to continue executing the repression at the borders, hot returns, the denial of basic social roles and rights. Beyond constitutional definitions and the different interpretations of its agreements, Both the PSOE and Junts want the competitions for their own interests that leave in the background the desperation of the people who risk their lives at sea, who flee from hunger, poverty, wars and repression. For these reasons, they do not question the migration policy of the European Union or the Migration and Asylum Pact.
The changes needed are fundamental.
Welcoming immigrants is a basic humanitarian obligation. It is a lie that they are a “threat to native employment” and the “national customs” as the right and those who buy into their hate speech claim. The arrival of immigrants is a hallmark of humanity, feeds society as a whole with its contribution to cultural diversity and economic growth. The problem is not immigration but capitalism that causes wars, economic crises and widespread poverty. The enemies of the working people are not among the people who come from other countries, but between the patterns, the great businessmen, the rich and the bankers who accumulate million-dollar profits at the expense of cutting social rights, of paying salaries that do not cover the inflationary rise, of imposing high rates and unpayable rents. The total amnesty, Catalan self-determination, the immigration with full rights, roles for everyone and social achievements will take on a truly positive cause only when the mobilizations break the walls of the institutional labyrinth through which they wander.. To make it, It is necessary to build new revolutionary and socialist political organizations that support the struggles for immediate needs, in the perspective of a strategic change, for a fairer model that can only come from the hand of socialism.
