Catalonia: Solidarity with the educational community in struggle
Teachers and educational staff maintain a forceful day of strike with road closures, demonstrations and pickets in centers, demanding quality public education without cuts or privatizations. We need a great unitary movement to fight for education, health and public transports.
Strong day of strike, pickets and mobilizations
Today, Wednesday 11 February 2026, A day of massive strike of teachers and educational care personnel takes place throughout Catalonia, with significant effects on mobility in Barcelona and other regions.
From first thing in the morning, teachers have cut off key roads such as the Ronda Litoral, the Gran Via, the Meridiana and several interurban roads (C-32 in Mataró, C-55 in Manresa, N-II in Vilamalla, C-17/C-25 on the Gurb of the C-37 on Vals. Pickets have been held in numerous centers and during the course of the day there will be more decentralized demonstrations in Barcelona, Tarragona, Girona, Lleida and Tortosa. The strike has been called jointly by the main educational unions -USTEC-STEs, ASPEPC-sps, CCOO, CGT, UGT and others- in public and subsidized centers, with extensive monitoring of the sector despite the minimum services established by the Department of Education (one teacher for every three classrooms).
The complaints are fair
The conflict arises from the chronic underfunding of the public education system, which has translated into loss of real purchasing power of more than 20%, insufficient templates, Overwhelmed ratios that prevent decent attention to the diversity of the students, and an excessive bureaucratic burden that denatures pedagogical work. These factors not only affect teachers., but they deteriorate public education as a whole, weakening its quality and universal access in the face of a model that prioritizes cuts and privatizations. For these reasons, union demands are more than justified: recovery of lost purchasing power, increased wages and decent working conditions, reduction of ratios and expansion of staff with more teachers and support staff, elimination of unproductive bureaucratic burdens, and sufficient resources to guarantee an inclusive public school, equitable and democratic.
Governments are responsible for the deterioration
Political responsibility falls on both the Generalitat and the central government.. The Government has tried to manage the conflict by proposing improvements conditional on the approval of the Budgets of 2026, but without concrete agreements that satisfy the demands of the teaching base or reverse the austerity policies applied in recent years. Today it is Illia of the PSC representing Pedro Sánchez (PSOE), but before that it was the leaders of ERC and Junts who did the same. Both the State and the Generalitat have systematically failed to adequately finance the right to public education., giving space to private business and capitalist market logic. This translates into a precarious public school, with insufficient resources, subcontracting and territorial inequalities that mainly affect the popular classes and the most vulnerable sectors.
Let's support the strike and the actions
We stand in solidarity with the strike and the fighting actions of the educational community as part of a broader resistance against the cuts, commercialization and policies that weaken the public. Education cannot and should not be a consumer good; It is a basic social right that must be 100% public, financed with sufficient resources, democratically managed by workers and users, with real control of the educational community and union organizations, and protected against any attempt at privatization or outsourcing.

For a great unitary movement in defense of the public
In recent days there have been struggles by workers and transport users, of health and education, but all separated by the leaders, which does not help strengthen the claims.
This educational conflict is part of a broader fight in defense of universal public services: health, transport, teaching, dependence, culture and housing. It is essential to coordinate and unify the struggles of the different sectors in conflict to build a great unitary movement that does not accept crumbs or maneuvers, but real achievements dignify working conditions, get budget increases and put control in the hands of those who make education possible: its workers and its users.
Today's strike demonstrates that unitary mobilization is the most powerful tool to confront governments that prioritize capital over popular needs. May this day be one more step towards dignified public education, emancipatory and at the service of the entire society, with a true plan of struggle and general strike.
