Zapatero Case: structural corruption and the need for “turn the tables”
The Zapatero case once again exposes the rot of the '78 regime and the capitalist system in the Spanish State. Beyond the PSOE thieves, PP y Vox, there are the working people and those who fight for democratic and social rights in different autonomous communities. We need a new radical left political alternative.

The indictment of former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for crimes of influence peddling, money laundering and criminal organization opened a new political crisis in the Spanish State. According to the judicial summaries and leaks known in recent days, The investigation revolves around the rescue of the Plus Ultra airline, instrumental companies, dark transfers and a business plot linked to international gold businesses, oil and political lobby.
The investigation indicates that the plot would have used shell companies to carry out simulated operations and channel money through business networks.. The Central Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF) places Zapatero at the center of decisions related to the rescue of Plus Ultra and tracks payments and links with people in his family and political environment.
The former president denies all accusations and denounces a political and media operation against him, something that also exists collaterally since the PP and Vox always try to capitalize on crises. But regardless of the judicial outcome, the case already expresses something deeper: the structural degradation of the institutions of the regime 1978 designed by the Franco regime and legitimized by the Transition.
It is not a “lightning in a clear sky”
In recent years, The Spanish State was plagued by permanent scandals: the Koldo plot, Kitchen, Belt, Punic, the Andalusian ERE, illegal financing of the PP, commissions linked to public contracts, the black cards, the monarchy's businesses and the multiple cases of business corruption linked to construction companies, banks and energy.
Since the Transition, the regime 78 It worked as a great agreement between the old Francoist structure, the restored monarchy, the big businessmen and the parties of the system. Corruption is not an exceptional deviation: It is an organic mechanism of functioning of Spanish capitalism. Privatizations, bank bailouts, revolving doors and clientelist networks were a constitutive part of that regime.
That is why it is completely hypocritical that the PP tries to present itself as a “moral” alternative to the PSOE.. The Popular Party drags decades of structural corruption: Belt, Barcenas, Kitchen, Those, Punic and multiple territorial plots showed a system of institutionalized plunder.
It is no coincidence that every time the PP and the PSOE debate the controversy over corruption, they escape "And you more"
But Vox does not represent any renewal either.. Although he tries to capitalize on social discontent with a reactionary and nationalist discourse, defends the same economic system and the interests of big businessmen, banks and the monarchy. Wherever he governs with the PP he applies cuts, privatizations and repressive policies against workers, migrants and youth.
The problem goes far beyond corrupt individual leaders. The problem is the capitalist system itself, where a business and financial minority controls political power, economic and media. While millions suffer precariousness, impossible rents and deterioration of public services, Elites use the State to enrich themselves and guarantee private businesses.
There is another reality, that of the working people
Over, the corrupt dominate in their institutional labyrinth, Below are the workers who fight. Doctors and teachers mobilized in Valencia and Catalonia against the emptying of healthcare and public education. Precarious youth facing unpayable rents. The workers' strikes and the feminist and social struggles that question the permanent adjustment.
These struggles show the opposite path to that of structural corruption. It is necessary to build a new political alternative independent of the PSOE and its reformist partners, of the PP and its far-right partners and all employers' variants. A radical left political tool, working class, combative, democratic and internationalist. The result of the elections in Andalusia with the success of Adelante Andalucía open the way to do it, as long as there is political will to take that course.
You have to "turn the tables"
The bottom line does not involve “regenerating” this exhausted regime, but to defeat him and “turn the tables”. Support all workers and popular struggles, confront the privileges of businessmen and bankers, so that the workers govern with a regime of workers' democracy in a Socialist Republic within a Free Federation of Socialist Republics of the Peninsula.
Only a revolutionary and socialist transformation of society can end the structural corruption generated by capitalism and make way for a society organized according to the needs of the majority and not the profit of a few..
