HOLCIM: One more fight in a depressed city
Let's support the workers' struggle in Jerez de la Frontera.
By Jaime Flores
In the end of January, of this year, Holcim company (Lafarge Holcim from Jerez de la Frontera) told his employees the decision to start a consultation period at the “framework of a collective dismissal”, that is to say, an ERE. As recounted, The company thus wants to start the process of converting its cement factory into a grinding station, “from where we would continue serving the market in the region ". Obviously, the staff does not think it is correct and they have already started a calendar of mobilizations to repel said dismissals.
From the political side they have received all kinds of support, but those who have proposed greater solutions and cooperation with them, have been those who today make up the Andalusian platform "Andalusia does not give up" (anticapitalist, Andalusian Left, Andalusian Spring, Defend Andalusia and independents). Likewise, They have asked them to take their protest to the Parliament of Andalusia, among other coordinated and mutually agreed actions.
Holcim, a company dedicated to cement, declared the past 2019 a few benefits of 33 millions of euros, therefore, taking advantage of the economic and health crisis, they reduce the headcount and probably outsource the plant to another location with less taxes, worse working conditions and no requirement to comply with the pollution reduction.
The destruction of jobs in a city that carries so much unemployment next to the already tiny industrial center would be a very hard blow. No to the closing of HOLCIM!
