Successful International Meeting of Socialist Women

This Saturday 5 of March, convened by the International Socialist League we virtually find ourselves companions of more than 25 countries and from all continents to prepare our intervention in the different actions of the 8 of March, international day of working women, and continue organizing the fight for all our rights from a revolutionary socialist perspective.

The opening was carried out by Cele Fierro from the MST-FIT Unit of Argentina, Derya Coka from Turkey's SEP and Rehana Akhtar from Pakistan's La Lucha.

In the different interventions, international solidarity with the people of Ukraine was highlighted., especially with the women and workers who resist the Russian imperialist attack. They urged not to trust NATO or Yankee imperialism.

Sofiya Boichuk's words were exciting, militant of the Ukrainian Socialist League that we transcribe here:

”The situation of women in my country continues to be unsatisfactory. We have no representation in parliament, women are underrepresented in government. Although the vast majority of the population supports the inclusion of women in politics. It is worth noting that women take an active part in the life of the country, in particular, many women oppose Russian imperialism on the front, with weapons in hand. Many women work in law enforcement.

Women in Ukraine face problems not so much in politics as in everyday life. Opinions on the role of women in society and the family are very conservative: the majority (including many women!) they believe that a woman's place is in the kitchen and with the children. The situation is exacerbated by the relative popularity of far-right and right-wing conservative ideas. These people often go overboard in reactionary ways against leftist ideas., which becomes a real hatred towards different segments of society: people of other races and nationalities, LGBT society, women. I claim this as a person who was like this.

Neoliberal and patriotic views are much more common among women. Many comrades naively believe that the European Union and other representatives of Western imperialism will free them from dictatorship and oppression.

The problem is also that there is no decent alternative in our society. Unfortunately, the majority of the left forces are pro-Russian and shout everywhere about the threat from the West, but not a word about the atrocities of the Putin regime. Instead, the Ukrainian Socialist League is fighting against any manifestation of imperialism, so we must do a lot of propaganda work.".

After, Maryanne Kasina and Minoo Kyaa of the Revolutionary Socialist League of Kenya took the floor, recently incorporated to the LIS. His intervention showed how we from the LIS emphasize that the struggle of the exploited and oppressed is one, no matter the country, the language or the continent where we are.

Then, Catherine Noury from La Commune de France intervened, Chaia Amhed Baba from the Saharawi Youth Union of Western Sahara, Rim Trad from Youth for Change in Lebanon and Maura Gálvez from Movimiento Anticapitalista de Chile.

Ariana McGuarie of the Anticapitalist Alternative of Nicaragua denounced the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship and called for promoting the international campaign for the freedom of political prisoners that we are promoting in unity with revolutionary organizations from different countries.

The compañera Socorro Trejos of the Executive Committee of the Partido Revolucionario de las Trabajadores Costa Rica also took the floor. Comrades Verónica O'Kelly from Alternativa Socialista and Silvia Leticia from Lucha Socialista spoke about Brazil. The compañera Zuleika Matamoros and Ángela Alarcón intervened for Socialist Tide of Venezuela for Socialist Impulse of Colombia. Patricia Totorica of Socialist Rumbo of Uruguay took the word and Sara Espinola of Paraguay in the name of Socialist Alternative. And Flor Nolasco by the LIS of Peru.

For the first time, compañera Bermet Borubaeva participated with us, by kyrgsoc, Marxist organization from Kyrgyzstan and Snejana Rogach from Belarus was present.

It was very enriching for the organization in the face of this 8M, for gender rights and dissidence, but above all for the struggle of a socialist world. For the construction of revolutionary parties that will fight until this capitalist system is overthrown, father of all violence. That is the fight that the International Socialist League gives, for a world without oppression and exploitation, where we, the workers, are the ones who govern.

We share the video of the meeting:

voices the meeting

Cele Fierro, MST in the FIT Unit (Argentina)

welcome, fellow socialists from all over the world! Beyond borders and different languages, our fight is the same against the capitalist and patriarchal system, for equality and socialism. First, our solidarity with the women and people of Ukraine. in wars, We women and girls are also the ones who suffer the most.

Here just over a year ago we achieved the right to abortion. Our party actively intervened in that fight and we won many young militants. Then the pandemic appeased the social struggles. The health workers also came out, like in so many countries. And back to school, today the teachers are fighting. Now we face the agreement of the government and the International Monetary Fund, that implies more adjustment and extractivism.

With the crisis of capitalism there is more social and political polarization: grow right, but also the space for our ideas and proposals. This meeting strengthens us to continue building our organizations and the LIS. Forward, companions!

Derya husband, SEP (Turkey)

In Turkey, Erdogan changed the system via dictatorship. A very dynamic sector were women, although there is a crisis in the movement. Except for the case of the Argentine, with a successful socialist intervention, the rest of the world is very different and in general there are identity politics.

In the history of women's struggle, the milestone is the Bolshevik revolution., who socialized care tasks, gave freedom to dissent and was the beginning of a socialist society.

Türkiye is going through a very critical moment. The struggle of women suffered a great reduction and poverty and violence grow. Now there are some spontaneous strikes and the workers start the fight against labor inequality, salary and precariousness.

The women's movement has ideological problems, where should we intervene: It's identity politics, that targets men, not to the system or governments. In Türkiye we created a united front with women's organizations, We called a march for 8M and we waged a tough ideological battle with other sectors.

Rehana Akhtar, The struggle (Pakistan)

Women still have to deal with violence today, bullying and abuse. We work 8 O 10 hours in a factory and when we return home we have to wash the clothes, clean, etc., free, in a double exploitation.

In Pakistan and the Third World the situation of women is more apathetic. There is a feminist movement, but it is still weak and does not manage to make the bases of working women, but rather middle class and intellectual. But we try to connect the women's movement with that of the working class.

Talking about the women's question without talking about the class question does not contribute to the movement of the working class. We don't consider ourselves just feminists: we are marxists, because women's problems can only be solved in socialism. With the Bolshevik revolution many of these daily questions had been resolved..

Let's work and fight together, along with the workers' struggle. We can't fight separately, but we can fight together and win.

Maryanne Kasina and Minoo Kyaa, LSR (Kenya)

I am very happy to participate in this conference. And Kenya, we are going through a great crisis due to imperialism and capitalism. We demand access to housing, Water, education, menstrual products, basic things. Lack of dignity is perpetuated through patriarchal violence. There are women who suffer gender violence through the police, that murders our children and violates us. We need to keep fighting and the middle class must join the working class in solidarity.. Our fight is until all women are free. Yes in Cuba, Venezuela, Kurdistan or Palestine they are not free, we are not. And no man is free if we women are not..

We continue our fight against capitalism, that our region is very strong. It is also very difficult to organize: there are historical issues that do not contribute to the situation of women, but to the oppressive system. That is why it is necessary to carry out a process of political education and for women to understand what patriarchy is., and that it is a system that not only oppresses us but also men, It puts them in complex situations and is also expressed in class struggle and class consciousness..

Socorro Trejos, PRT (Costa Rica)

As women we must fight to overthrow this patriarchy, that marginalizes us. We are working women who fight for our freedom and equality. Women get ahead in any fight. Our fight is to help those who need the most, to the poor people. If we don't eliminate capitalism, that has us in this misery, we will never have equality.

We are great fighters, We went through a lot and we got through it.. We know the situation now in Ukraine and that the war marginalizes us. Because we are in a war, the woman is always exposed. It is the one that can be violated, They violate our rights and then we must focus on our fight to end this capitalism.

It has been a pleasure to share these words with you and I hope that we share our knowledge and experiences. Hugs for all and forward!

Patricia Totorica, Socialist Rumbo (Uruguay)

In Uruguay there have been significant advances in recent years. In 2012, the approval of the abortion law. But we have to continue defending that conquest. We have had a right-wing government for two years., that has brought a setback. The good thing is that we are resisting. Every time the government tries to go back on enforcing this law, we go out to the street. The feminist movement is very diverse, but we come together for each of these occasions.

What is the combination between class and gender?? It is a topic to debate. There is a link between patriarchy, capitalism and Catholic values to sustain this system. It is very difficult to fight patriarchy if we do not fight capitalism and hegemonic values. There is also much to heal and combat within our own movements. As Flora Tristán said in 1834, "Women are the proletarians of the proletariat". Regrettably, that keeps happening.

A huge greeting to all of you and I think this meeting is beautiful to contact us and learn from each other..

Catherine Noury, the Commune (France)

In France, The situation has worsened since the start of the pandemic. On average, women win 28,5% less than men and retirements are 38% lower. Most of them still do unpaid domestic work. Both, 213.000 a year they suffer violence in their partner and in 2021 were murdered 113. One in two workers faced a situation of sexism or sexual harassment at work. They are all unacceptable violence.

In and for the class struggle, women become politically visible on a global scale. To improve the living conditions of everyone, They take to the streets and are willing to overthrow everything. Socialism brings us the goal of complete emancipation, that is, the end of patriarchy and its corollary, the capitalism. This is the meaning of the political project of the LIS, against all forms of oppression and exploitation.

Veronica O'Kelly, Socialist alternative (Brazil)

Brazil shares horrifying data about what women suffer, for example in poverty, that hits women and more so black women. That is to say, violence has class, color and gender. There are no ways to improve, but to worsen due to the capitalist crisis. So the struggles are linked against capital and against patriarchy.

Brazil is in fifth place in the world ranking of gender violence. In 2021 It is estimated that there was a femicide every 6 hours. We have different women's organizations, as we from Alternativa Socialista share with other colleagues within the PSOL. And we have debates with those who think that the struggle of women is separate from the struggle against capitalism.. The call of this conference is super real for us., complete and correct because working women have no other alternative to fight for socialism.

Sara Espinola, Socialist alternative (Paraguay)

In Paraguay, Women's rights are trampled in companies, in the neighborhoods, by the government. Every three minutes a woman is subjected to some type of violence, Every five days there are one or two cases of femicide and it reached six in one day, there are many cases of teenage pregnancies. Justice acts slowly and in many cases ignores our problems. The government is not interested in us and shows it with the military budget, while the Ministry of Women only gives two dollars per woman per year.

Without the total change of consciousness and internationalism it is not possible to defeat the "triple alliance": capitalist state, governments and external debt. We prepare strongly for this 8M, We are part of the national feminist articulation and we integrate our demands. Not One Less, comrades, united by socialism and equality!

Maura Galvez, anticapitalist movement (Chile)

In our country, The feminist wave has a place very close to that of Argentina in 2015. In 2016, the femicide of a girl 9 years, Florence, generated one of the most massive mobilizations after the dictatorship. A very diverse and combative feminist movement was formed.. It is crossed by political directions, in this case the 8M Coordinator, that end up diluting the feminist force to give a political signal to the future Boric government.

They broke up the 8M march towards territorial activities, without marching with a unified slogan or generating assemblies. This gives us socialists a space to intervene. In this context, There is a very big expectation and void with the new Boric government. Our position is to seek alliances with the different sectors of revolutionary or more left-wing feminism.. This meeting is important to strengthen a pole of revolutionary feminism at an international level, that fights for a clear horizon: socialism.

Rim Trad, Youth for Change (Lebanon)

The situation of women in Lebanon is linked to the struggle of women worldwide. He 2021 showed an increase of 200% of cases of violence regarding 2020. The crisis puts its weight on the shoulders of women and other marginalized communities. Women still cannot pass their citizenship to their children and the justice system can prohibit them from seeing them..

Women are oppressed by capitalism and patriarchy; There are bourgeois feminist organizations that see it as independent of capitalism.. Some fight for inclusion in elections, but they would be used by politicians to claim their power.

In the Arab world, women experience a similar or worse situation, in patriarchal societies and countries; in Palestine, They fight against the Zionist occupation and lead national liberation. Arab women were on the front line of national liberation movements, protests and marches. Feminism that is not anti-capitalist will never serve the working class, but it is going to recreate these offensive systems against women and minorities.

Flor Nolasco, of the DSL (Peru)

The women of Peru bet on a feminist organization, socialist, Democratic, different, intercultural. We believe it is necessary to break the patriarchal and racist structures that harm women. And we reaffirm ourselves in a popular feminism, plural, democratic and intersectional, that confronts capitalism and colonialism.

In Peru the government has abandoned these flags and our participation is not taken into account. We want them to comply with the flags approved in the Bicentennial Plan, where we vote for the participation of women throughout the territory. There is no education in gender equality, neither political participation nor a life free of violence.

We stand in solidarity with our sisters, migrants, sex workers, trans women, those affected by the oil spill and in the Peruvian Amazon. We are committed to continuing to build a popular constituent process that allows us a country with hope.

Ariana McGuire, Socialist alternative (Nicaragua)

Nicaragua is going through an ebb in the fight against the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship, by a policy of repression and state terrorism following the outbreak of 2018. There is a campaign against feminist organizations, human rights, activists, independent journalists and political leaders. The 8M cannot leave. And the political opposition groups of "dialogue and conciliation", promoted by private companies and the "international community", They guaranteed Ortega's re-election.

Today there are more than 170 political prisoners, even leaders like Ana Margarita Vijil, Tamara Dávila and Suyén Barahona. They are tortured, with zero vision with his family and lawyers, in isolation, no sunlight or medical care. We call for the creation of an international movement for the freedom of all political prisoners., facing a government that usurps the flag of the left and socialism. We promote actions in embassies and an international day during the week of 18 of April, four years after the rebellion.

Angela Alarcon, Socialist Impulse (Colombia)

Women and dissidents have put our demands on the political agenda, during the great outbreak of 2021 and then with the decriminalization of abortion: we conquered it until the week 24, but our green tide must continue for legal abortion, safe and free.

The crisis is inherent to capitalism. Multilateral organizations demand adjustment and precariousness programs. Gender inequality is determined by the capitalist mode of production, that sustains patriarchal oppression for the benefit of the ruling class.

Radical feminism falls into identity politics and separatism, in punitive behavior and cancellation, sometimes used against revolutionary leaderships. And reformist feminism has called for action, but it has closed the debates in a bureaucratic role, downgrades the fighting program and says that the only way to achieve our rights is electoral. This right-wing of reformisms asks women and dissidents to build a revolutionary solution together with our companions..

Willow flower, SOL (Spanish state)

We consider ourselves anti-capitalist feminists. There are other sectors of feminism that we must fight against. Institutional feminism is growing in the Spanish State and Western Europe, linked to pseudo-progressive governments such as that of the PSOE-Unidas Podemos. Before him 8 of March, They don't want to go on strike. The majority unions, Workers Commissions and UGT, They didn't even call an assembly.

In this frame, anti-capitalist feminism has an important role to play. It is key to win the streets 8 March and continue organizing, generating spaces like this meeting, everywhere we can. I think there is a before and after in the heads of many women, A great debate has been opened and that we have a role to play in this context. At the international level, The LIS and our feminist groups have a lot of ground to advance.

Silvia Leticia, Socialist Struggle (Brazil)

The struggle of working women is a necessity for the construction of socialism. The struggles for life, food, tierra, rights, They are anti-capitalist struggles and against patriarchy.

In Brazil the problems are worsened by the crisis, the pandemic and Bolsonaro's genocidal government. In 2018 We fought hard against the murder of our colleague Marielle Franco and also for Ele Não against Bolsonaro.

Black women are three times more likely to suffer sexual violence and femicides. There is a 40% more murders of trans people. I am a mother of two trans people and it is outrageous to see the daily deaths.

We have to continue strengthening the fight, repudiate capitalist governments and defend working women, with a class perspective. We must defeat Bolsonaro and his adjustment, without trusting the bourgeois electoral process. A large part of the feminist organizations insist on tying the movement to the blind defense of a PT government and Lula.. It is necessary to strengthen our unity in the struggle and organization.

Sofia Boichuk, LSU (Ukraine)

The situation of women in my country remains unsatisfactory. But they are an active part in the life of the country; many oppose Russian imperialism, in the front, with weapons in hand.

Opinions about the role of women in society and the family are very conservative: most believe that their place is in the kitchen and with children. This is compounded by the relative popularity of right-wing and far-right ideas., which turns into hatred towards people of other races and nationalities, LGBT, women.

Most leftist forces are pro-Russian and only talk about the threat from the West, but nothing about the atrocities of the Putin regime. Instead, The Ukrainian Socialist League fights against all forms of imperialism.

Zuleika Matamoros, United Socialist (Venezuela)

In my country the conditions to fight are becoming more urgent, aggravated by the crisis, the pandemic and the economic sanctions of American imperialism. The feminization of poverty translates into more than six million migrants and precarious lives. Days ago, the Maduro government announced a minimum wage equivalent to 29 dollars a month, before a food basket of 446 Dollars.

Other aspects are the repression and imprisonment of workers for fighting. There are dozens of workers imprisoned and prosecuted. Sexual education is non-existent, Access to contraceptives is commodified and abortion is illegal.

The women's movement is very weak, institutionalized, with pro-government feminists and NGOs that do not go against the system, although last year we were able to weave networks to mobilize. Our feminism is class: we promote the mobilization and construction of a working class party.

Bermet Borubaeva, KyrgSots (Kyrgyzstan)

It's a pleasure to be here. We were part of the USSR, where we had a women's emancipation movement. In our State there was a great progressive legacy towards women, right to education, to the vote, etc. From there we can get ideas. We claim Rosa Luxemburg. Now there is a setback, a lot of violence and inequality against women, it's very sad.

Our organization is feminist, Marxist, nueva, let's go step by step. We try to work with the unions, with women who work in production and whose rights are violated. We want to show that there is no way to emancipate women without ending capitalism and turning it into an egalitarian society..

About the current war situation, In our country they use a lot of money on nuclear weapons. It's not a problem today, but of this global system that is preparing to commit this type of massacres.

I am very happy to have met everyone and we want to connect from here to continue building.

Chaia Ahmed Baba, Sahrawi Youth Union and LIS (Sahara Occidental)

We feel identified with each struggle. I know what war is and what you suffer. My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine.

About Arab women, war is in force every day. Many people were killed, but unfortunately it is the only solution to achieve our freedom. While we are colonized, Women still do not enjoy our freedom.

Morocco has its forces in the occupied Sahrawi areas. Women don't feel safe, They die and the reason or cause is not known because it is always the occupant. They experience torture, sexual violations, verbal, psychological, materials. And yet they continue to resist. Sultana Khaya is an example. At the UN there is evidence, but everything is silence because our country is exploited by the European Union.

Our obligation is to join forces. How do I receive support?, I am willing to support. The fight of one is the fight of all. A special greeting to the colleagues from Kenya and a huge hug to those from Ukraine.
