Ceuta: Again the disastrous “Europe Fortress” in action
Thousands of people flee poverty, wars and other scourges of capitalism and, again, the European Union, Spain and Morocco turn borders into a death trap. Solidarity and immediate mobilization in defense of migrants. For a world without borders.
By Ruben Tzanoff
The arrival of tens of thousands of migrants to Ceuta in a few days has caused a situation of serious humanitarian crisis. Collapsed shelters, people sleeping outdoors, numerous deaths during attempts to swim across and a strong militarization of the border show, once again, the true face of the call “fortress europe”. Governments, The media and the extreme right present these events as a “migratory avalanche” or a security problem. Nevertheless, the reality is exactly the opposite: It is not the migrants who generate the crisis, but a capitalist and imperialist system that first expels millions of human beings from their countries and then denies them the right to seek a dignified life. It is a reality marked by decades of domination and plunder by European imperialism., that now cynically tears its clothes at the consequences of its own policies.
The real causes: pillage, wars and poverty
Nobody leaves their home, his family and risks his life at sea of his own free will. Mass migrations through North Africa are a consequence of decades of economic exploitation, external debt, destruction of local economies, appropriation of natural resources and trade policies imposed by great powers. Added to this are wars, the instability caused by imperialist interventions in the Middle East and the Sahel, the expansion of conflicts fueled by these same interventions and the increasingly devastating effects of the climate crisis, that especially hit the most impoverished regions of the planet. Millions of people are forced to emigrate because capitalism has denied them any prospect of survival in their own countries..

The European Union strengthens its walls, not human rights
Far from facing the causes of the migration phenomenon, The European Union has chosen to protect its borders. Strengthening Frontex, The agreements to outsource migration control to third countries and the European Pact on Migration and Asylum consolidate a policy based on militarization, expulsions and criminalization of those seeking refuge. The EU allocates billions of euros to build walls, finance repressive forces and strengthen surveillance systems, while cutting legal and safe avenues for migration. At the same time, Big European capital continues to benefit from a migrant workforce subjected to precariousness, used to reduce wages and weaken the labor rights of the entire working class.
The Spanish Government maintains a repressive policy
The Spanish Government of Pedro Sánchez and the PSOE - with the complicity of Sumar- continues to manage the borders of the European Union through a policy of militarization and tightening of immigration control, with a barely nuanced speech, but in the same direction as the reactionary policy of the PP, Vox and Catalan Alliance. He “progressive” Sánchez describes what happened as a “violation of territorial integrity” and has announced the placement of “buoys on the breakwater” to create a visual barrier that allows express repatriations.
Los discursos de odio han alentado a ultraderechistas y grupos fascistas a perseguir y agredir físicamente a personas migrantes en plena ciudad, Therefore, we must stop their hand in Ceuta and prevent this from spreading to other countries., so that it does not happen like in the summer of 2025 in Torre Pacheco.
Hot returns, the permanent deployment of the Civil Guard and Army, The concertinas and the application of the agreements signed with Morocco are part of a strategy that prioritizes repression over the protection of human rights. Recurrent deaths in Melilla, The new victims registered in Ceuta and the systematic repression against migrants are not isolated events. They constitute the direct consequence of a border policy that considers migrants as a threat and not as human beings fleeing desperate situations.. No person is illegal!
Morocco uses migration as a political instrument
The ultra-reactionary monarchy of Mohamed VI shares a central responsibility in this and other migration crises. While repressing workers, young boys, social movements and the Sahrawi people, The Moroccan regime acts as guardian of European borders in exchange for financing and political support. At different times, The Moroccan regime has tightened or relaxed border controls according to its diplomatic interests with Spain and the European Union, using thousands of migrants as an instrument of pressure in bilateral negotiations.
The migrant population is thus trapped between two equally reactionary policies.: the repression of the Moroccan regime and the closure of borders promoted by the European Union. And for the future, The EU is adopting the reactionary model of the far-right Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, of outsourcing deportations to real prisons outside the continent.
Faced with racism and militarization, international solidarity
The extreme right tries to take advantage of each immigration crisis to promote racism, divide the working class and blame migrants for problems whose origin is in the policies of capitalism. Faced with this xenophobic discourse, liberal and social democratic governments respond by reinforcing exactly the same border control policies that fuel hatred and multiply tragedies. The answer must be exactly the opposite.: Immediate rescue of all people in danger, end of hot returns, decent accommodation, effective access to the right of asylum, regularization of those who live and work in Europe, repeal of the Immigration Law and breaking of immigration agreements with repressive regimes.

End the causes, not persecute victims
As long as they continue the imperialist plunder, The wars, exploitation and inequality, millions of people will continue to be forced to leave their homes. No wall can stop that reality. The fight against racism and for the rights of migrants is part of the same fight of the working class against capitalism. Facing fortress Europe, We defend unity among workers, full equality of rights and an internationalist socialist perspective that puts an end to the root causes of forced migrations. There are no more migrants. There are no more militarized borders, governments at the service of capital and a capitalist system that turns the need to live into a crime.
Solidarity and mobilization right now
In the European Union there are sufficient resources to guarantee social rights for all people, regardless of your place of origin, There should be even more for those fleeing the economic horror, social or whatever. The point is that governments dedicate the large funds at their disposal to favor the rich, businessmen and to promote arms production for inter-imperialist wars. Solidarity, los inmigrantes deberían ser recibidos y con plenos derechos sociales y democráticos en los países de la UE. It is necessary that political parties, the union centers, human rights organizations and others immediately call for united mobilization in defense of migrants, your life and your rights. ¡Y es necesaria la autoorganización y la autodefensa para cuidar la vida de los inmigrantes ante los ataques fascistas!
Faced with this new humanitarian disaster, expression of the path of barbarism to which imperialist capitalism and fortress Europe lead, we raise a completely opposite alternative: No to austerity and military spending for inter-imperialist wars!! Resources for workers and people who need them, are the country that are! Enough of capitalist and racist governments! Let the workers and the people govern!! No to the imperialist European Union. For a socialist Europe and a world without borders. Life is worth more than weapons!
