Catalonia: No to the Mossos in the institutes!
Teachers, Students and families question the presence of Mossos in educational centers and denounce previous cuts in social personnel. Let's support your claims! Let the unions respond with a strike!
A repressive and reprehensible plan
The new pilot plan promoted by the Generalitat of Catalonia to deploy civilian Mossos d'Esquadra agents in institutes considered "conflictive" has unleashed rejection in broad sectors of the educational community and popular. The measure, presented as a response to situations of school violence, proposes the stable presence of unarmed police inside the centers, with mediation and prevention functions.
The Government argues that the objective is to guarantee coexistence and reinforce security in the classrooms. According to the Ministry of the Interior, The agents will act in plain clothes, They will have their own space in the centers and will work in coordination with the school management.. The initiative, hold, responds to the increase in incidents and attacks.
The rejection is widespread
Nevertheless, the rejection has been widespread. Teaching unions, Students and families denounce that the measure does not address the structural causes of conflicts. They point out, Besides, an obvious contradiction: The administration itself has recently reduced the number of social integration professionals—of 420 a 300—, cutting key resources for containment and educational support, while allocating funds to police presence. For a large part of the educational community, Replacing social intervention with police control implies a worrying turn in the school model.
Far-right measures applied by the “progressive socialists”
It is a reprehensible attempt to normalize police presence in educational spaces, warning that it can generate a climate of surveillance, stigmatize certain centers and criminalize students, instead of promoting inclusive pedagogical environments. Y, as a repressive measure it coincides with the aspirations of Vox, the PP and the far-right sectors, but they are not the ones who apply it.
The political responsibility for this orientation falls directly on Salvador Illa and the Party of Socialists of Catalonia. (PSC) who governs the Generalitat as a representative of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) headed by Pedro Sanchez. The “progressives” far from promoting educational policies based on the reinforcement of pedagogical and social teams, They opt for a repressive response that introduces the police into educational centers, aligning with a control logic rather than accompaniment. This decision is not isolated, but part of a broader political line that prioritizes containment and discipline over structural investment in public education.
The plan has the miserable support of the teaching union ASPEC, majority in secondary, that considers the measure necessary in the face of the increase in situations of violence. Even arguing real facts such as that the teachers have suffered some type of aggression and that they need safe working conditions.
This is how a teacher from the affected centers in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat told us his opinions.
"First of all, tell you that it seems that there is a fairly broad consensus on the part of a large part of society, but mainly from the educational community, workers, students and families, in the form of rejection of this pilot plan. This pilot plan that has been carried out unilaterally by the Government, It is a coordination between the Department of Education and the Interior. We don't know exactly what it responds to.. Yes, it responds to trying to obtain electoral revenue, putting on the table policies that fit into the mental framework of this misunderstood security. It focuses on the consequences of policies that push many residents of working-class neighborhoods into misery and precariousness instead of trying to focus on the causes., which are evidently these policies that generate precariousness. So, We understand that it is a measure that stigmatizes some centers, some neighborhoods and some communities and that, so, feeds these racist and reactionary positions. We do not know what the pedagogical criteria may be behind it because it is not understood how in the last two years the number of social integration techniques has been reduced., of counselors in our centers and, instead, Now a resource is provided that represents a cost in the form of a police figure that we understand will also supervise the work that teachers do., will surely try to coerce the attitudes that both the students and the workers have, precisely at a time when teachers are highly mobilized and, bueno, it's hard to understand. We do not believe that there is any type of electoral benefit, We believe that it is a very poor calculation by the PSC that assumes the mental framework of the right and the extreme right.. I don't know if this stigmatizes, has been taken unilaterally, goes against what the entire educational community asks for, which are more resources in the form of professionals who do have the training to address the conflict that does exist in some centers, but it is a conflict that is the consequence of policies that attack the working class of our neighborhoods. Above, We found out everything because how the information was leaked, they were forced to notify us. It's a shame!
Schools without police! Future without capitalism!
From Socialism and Freedom (SOL) we repudiate the police presence in schools, We demand that the measure not be applied and be immediately canceled. To reverse this barbarity, It is necessary to demand that the unions call assemblies to organize a great struggle between teachers, education workers, students and the entire educational community, that unites the workers and the people, with all kinds of actions that are decided democratically and the call for a strike so that there are no police in schools. That the money be invested in social integration measures, not in control and repression.
The underlying causes of violence in schools and in society are found in the very essence of the capitalist system that, with exploitation and oppression, generates poverty., Social inequality, marginality, discrimination and fills youth with hopelessness in the future. These measures also favor privatizations as a business, when you need an education 100% public, free and quality, planned by its own workers and by the educational community, always with the strategy of an anti-capitalist fund exit, to build a different society, egalitarian and democratic, that can only be socialist.
